Credit repair is essentially the process of reviewing one’s credit report to identify and dispute inaccurate and outdated information, as well as work with creditors to ensure that accurate negative entries are presented as favorably as possible.  The desired result is to achieve a good credit report that translates to a higher credit score.

Why is it important to clean up your credit report? Creditors will examine your credit reports before deciding whether you qualify for loans and at what interest rate. Understandably, the higher risk you are the more expensive your borrowing cost will be. Employers also check your reports when making hiring decisions. Therefore, any effort to raise your credit score will bring monetary savings in future financing.

Three approaches you can follow in your quest to fix your credit include signing up with a credit repair service, retaining a credit repair lawyer, or employing do it yourself credit repair.

Credit repair services have been negatively labeled and for good reason as a lot of those “companies” were scams preying on unsuspecting consumers, taken in by the lofty promises of a complete erasure of their bad credit. There are legitimate operations out there but you have to do your homework to find them.

Credit repair attorneys offer professional knowledge and experience in addressing consumer credit repair and debt reduction. They will work with you to review and assess your credit reports, tackle negative entries, negotiate with creditors to settle debt, and advise on a plan to continue to maintain or increase your credit rating. The advantage of working with a credit repair law firm is the confidentiality of a lawyer-client relationship. But do you really need that? The biggest disadvantage of retaining these professionals is the high fees. Be aware that there are also “bad apples” in this category.

As you can see, there is nothing that the credit repair attorney will do that you cannot research and do yourself. The credit repair process is methodical and once you understand the steps to follow, you too can learn to improve credit rating.

However, if you’ve already attempted to fix your credit and are not seeing results or if you have serious debt problems, you may benefit from consulting credit repair lawyers. The cost of not having a clean credit could exceed the lawyer fees so it may be appropriate to opt for professional credit repair. Do a thorough check on potential firms before deciding on whom you want to represent you.
